Subject: An Invitation to Consider a New International Alliance of Democratic Nations

Dear President / Prime Minister:

I am writing to you as the leader of a democratic nation to ask for your consideration and input regarding a proposal that I believe deserves an international discussion.

I have written a book entitled The Breedo Way to Peace on Earth, which proposes replacing the present United Nations system with a new organization called the United Democratic Republic Nations (UDRN).

I recently sent a letter to President Donald J. Trump asking him and the United States to consider taking a leadership role in opening this discussion. A copy of that letter is enclosed for your review.

The central question behind The Breedo Way is simple:

Can the democratic nations of the world create an international organization that more effectively protects innocent people from tyranny, wrongful imprisonment, torture, aggressive war, and crimes against humanity?

For decades, people throughout the world have been murdered, wrongfully imprisoned, tortured, raped, displaced from their homes, and deprived of basic freedoms by governments that do not respect democratic principles or fundamental human rights.

Yet representatives of authoritarian governments continue to participate in international institutions and, in some instances, possess extraordinary influence over efforts intended to maintain international peace and security.

I believe democratic nations should seriously consider a different approach.

The proposed United Democratic Republic Nations would be composed of nations committed to representative government, the rule of law, individual liberty, and fundamental human rights. Among its proposals are:

  • Establishing clear democratic and human-rights requirements for UDRN membership.
  • Creating an international World Court with meaningful authority and due-process protections.
  • Providing lawful mechanisms for international arrest warrants and the freezing of assets when individuals are properly charged with serious international crimes.
  • Developing collective security among participating democratic nations.
  • Protecting people who are wrongfully imprisoned or persecuted by governments.
  • Redirecting resources toward humanitarian assistance, famine relief, children and families, environmental protection, and other peaceful purposes.
  • Creating an international organization in which authoritarian governments cannot use political power to prevent democratic nations from responding to grave abuses.

This proposal is not presented as a finished international treaty. It is intended to begin a discussion among democratic nations.

That is why I am writing to you.

I respectfully ask you and your government to review these proposals and provide your thoughts.

If you disagree with any portion of the proposal, I would sincerely like to know why and what alternative you believe could better protect innocent people.

We must also remember the human beings behind international statistics — the mothers and fathers whose children have been murdered, the families of people imprisoned without justice, the women who have suffered terrible violence, and the civilians who have endured torture and persecution.

What can the democratic world tell these families if we possess the ability to build a stronger system but fail even to discuss it?

I believe the time has come for democratic nations to have that discussion.

My hope is that the United States and other democratic countries will examine the UDRN concept, improve it where necessary, and determine whether its principles could provide the foundation for a safer and more peaceful international system.

The Breedo Way to Peace on Earth will soon be made available to the public. I also intend that most of the profits I receive from the book will be directed toward charitable and humanitarian purposes.

I respectfully invite your government to participate in this conversation and would be honored to receive your response.

The world may never eliminate every disagreement between nations. But democratic nations can decide that innocent human beings should no longer be abandoned simply because international institutions lack the ability or willingness to protect them.

Freedom is not free, and peace requires action.

Respectfully,
Alvin J. Brideau
